What it’s for
Pacing compares each campaign line’s spend with its budget, for one month or across its whole flight, so you can see what’s ahead, behind or not spending while there’s still time to act.
Each month’s budget comes from the line’s media plan, from an amount you type, from a monthly shape plan or, failing those, an even split of the flight total. Spend comes from the same synced platform data as Reports, matched to each line by platform and campaign, through yesterday.
The Pacing tab shows pace and status line by line. The Budgets tab is where you shape budgets across months and plan a month day by day. Clients don’t see pacing.

Questions
Where do pacing budgets come from?
From the line’s media plan, from amounts you type, or from a monthly shape plan. A line with none of those uses an even split of its flight total. The Source column says which.
How is the pace percentage calculated?
Daily pacing is Spend CTD ÷ Target so far. Target so far adds up each day’s planned amount through yesterday, so 100% means exactly on plan.
What do On track, Ahead, Behind and Not spending mean?
On track is within your tolerance of 100%, ±10% unless you change it. Ahead is above that, Behind is below it, and Not spending means no spend after at least two full days.
What does the tolerance setting change?
Only where On track ends and Ahead or Behind begin. Choose ±5%, ±10% or ±15% in On track within ± 10% at the top of Pacing.
Does Spend CTD include today?
No. Spend and Target so far both run through yesterday, so today’s partial spend never makes a line look behind.
What timezone does pacing use for today?
Your agency’s timezone, which is America/New_York by default. There’s no setting for it in Orbit.
Why is a campaign showing $0 spend?
Spend counts only from platform campaigns matched to the line, on its platform and within its flight dates. A line with no matched campaigns shows $0.
Can I match a platform campaign to an existing line?
No. In Pacing, an unmatched campaign can only become a new line, by typing a budget on its row.

How do I add a campaign that isn’t being paced?
A campaign that spent this month without a line shows a highlighted, empty budget box. Type its Budget for this month, or its Flight budget and dates in Whole flight.
Can I remove a line or ignore a campaign?
No. Pacing has no way to remove a line or hide an unmatched campaign.
Why is a campaign missing from Pacing?
In This month, a line shows only if its flight overlaps the month and the month has a budget. Also check your filters and that the client is in your Client Access.
Why doesn’t pacing spend match the Performance report?
Pacing counts only campaigns matched to each line, within its flight dates, by your agency’s timezone. Performance counts every campaign on the client’s accounts, by UTC date.
What does “Even split” mean?
The line has no monthly budget, so Orbit divided its flight total across its days. Press Edit and save a real amount to replace it.
Change a month’s budget or daily targetWhere pacing budgets come from
Why didn’t my shape plan change one month?
That month already has a plan or typed budget, which beats a shape plan. Change it with Edit instead.
Plan a campaign’s budget across monthsWhere pacing budgets come from
Can I undo a budget change?
Not as such. Enter the earlier amount again; every change is kept in Budget history.
Change a month’s budget or daily targetWhere pacing budgets come from
Why can’t I replan a month that’s already started?
Started months and passed days are locked. In the plan window, tick the option to replan them too.
What is “Today's target”?
The amount planned for today. On Daily budget lines it adds “put this in the platform today”; the card at the top adds it up across the lines on screen.
What does “Adjusted daily” mean?
What you’d need to spend each remaining day, including today, to land on budget: Budget left ÷ Days left.
What happens if I set a daily target?
Target so far follows the daily target instead of an even spread, while Budget left still follows the budget. Press Clear in the Edit panel to go back to an even spread.
Change a month’s budget or daily targetHow pacing is calculated
Why can’t I edit Start or End?
In This month, they show the part of the flight inside that month and are read-only. Switch to Whole flight to edit them.
Why does a line start on the 16th instead of the 1st?
In This month, Start and End show where the flight actually begins and ends within that month.
Who can see margin and profit?
Agency Owners and Admins, and only when a Trade Desk line is in view. Managers and Specialists don’t see them.
How is profit calculated?
Budget × margin: the month’s budget in This month, the flight total in Whole flight. It doesn’t use spend.
Why don’t I see the Impressions, Margin or Lifetime columns?
They appear only for the platforms that use them: Impressions and Margin for Trade Desk lines, Lifetime for Meta lines. Margin also needs an Owner or Admin. Press the group under Columns to open it.
Can Specialists edit pacing?
Yes, for the clients in their Client Access. They can’t see or set margins.
Can my client see pacing?
No. There’s no pacing page in the client portal.
Does the pacing export include margin?
No. The Excel export has no margin, profit or impression columns.
How it works
Explainer: Pacing statuses: On track, Ahead, Behind, Not spending
A line is On track when its Daily pacing is within your tolerance of 100%, which is ±10% unless you change it. Above that it’s Ahead; below, Behind.
| Status | When | At ±10% |
|---|---|---|
| Not spending | No spend, after at least two full days of the window | Spend is $0 |
| Ahead (red) | Daily pacing above 100% plus the tolerance | Over 110% |
| Behind (amber) | Daily pacing below 100% minus the tolerance | Under 90% |
| On track (green) | Anything in between, both ends included | 90% to 110% |
- Change the tolerance with On track within ± 10% at the top of the page: ±5%, ±10% or ±15%. It changes only these cut-offs.
- Pace counts through yesterday, so today’s partial spend never makes a line look behind.
Explainer: How pacing is calculated
Pace compares what’s been spent with what should have been spent by now. Daily pacing is Spend CTD ÷ Target so far, both counted through yesterday.
| Column | How it’s worked out |
|---|---|
| Spend CTD | Matched spend from the start of the window through yesterday |
| Target so far | Each day’s planned amount, added up through yesterday |
| Daily pacing | Spend CTD ÷ Target so far, as a % |
| Budget left | Budget − Spend CTD |
| Days left | Days from today to the end of the window, including today |
| Adjusted daily | Budget left ÷ Days left: what to spend each remaining day to land on budget |
| Today's target | Today’s planned amount |
| Spend pacing | Spend ÷ budget |
| CPM | Spend ÷ impressions × 1,000 |
- A day’s planned amount is the month’s budget spread evenly over its days, unless you set a daily target or a day plan.
- With a daily target, pace follows the daily target, and Budget left still follows the budget.
- On Daily and Daily (campaign cap) lines, Today's target adds “put this in the platform today”.
- Platform, region and Grand total rows, the Breakdown and the cards at the top add up budget, spend and target first, then work out pace from those totals.
- Totals show pace as how far off it is, such as “-23%” or “+15%”.
Explainer: Where pacing budgets come from
Each month of a line has one budget. It comes from the line’s media plan, from an amount you type, from a monthly shape plan or, if none of those exist, an even split of the flight total.
| Source | What it means |
|---|---|
| From plan | Taken from the line’s media plan. Changing it in Pacing doesn’t change the plan. |
| Set by hand | Typed in Pacing. |
| Shape plan (Shaped on Budgets) | From a monthly shape plan you saved. Used only for months with no plan or typed budget. |
| Even split | No monthly budget, so Orbit divides the flight total by days. Confirm or change it. |
- A plan or typed budget beats a shape plan, which beats an even split.
- Even split for a month = flight total × the flight’s days in that month ÷ the flight’s total days.
- When any line uses an even split, a banner says how many campaigns have no monthly budget in their media plan. Confirm or change those before trusting the numbers.
- Every change is saved as a new entry, so earlier amounts stay in Budget history. Budgets can’t be deleted; enter a new amount instead.
- In Pacing, the only way to add a line is to give a budget to a campaign that’s spending without one.
Explainer: What a line needs before it shows in Pacing
A line shows when it has a budget for the period you’re viewing. Spend counts only from the platform campaigns matched to it, within its flight dates.
- It belongs to a client in your Client Access.
- In This month, its flight overlaps the month you picked, and that month has a budget: a plan or typed budget, a shape plan, or a flight total to split.
- In Whole flight, at least one of its months has a budget.
- It passes your filters: client, platform, region, search, and any Breakdown row you clicked.
- Spend counts from a campaign only when it’s on the line’s platform and matched to the line, and only on days within the flight, through yesterday.
- A platform campaign that spent this month but isn’t matched to any line shows as a row with an empty, highlighted budget box. Fill it in to start pacing it.
- A line with no matched campaigns shows $0 spend. You can’t match campaigns to an existing line in Pacing.
Explainer: Margin and profit
Owners and Admins can enter a margin on The Trade Desk lines. Profit is the line’s budget × its margin, not its spend.
- The Margin column group appears only to Owners and Admins, and only when a Trade Desk line is in view.
- Type the margin as a whole percentage, such as 20 for 20%.
- Profit = budget × margin, using the month’s budget in This month and the flight total in Whole flight.
- Managers and Specialists don’t see margin or profit, and can’t save a margin.
- The Excel export doesn’t include margin or profit.
Limits: Pacing limits
Pacing covers 12 months back to 6 months ahead, counts spend through yesterday in your agency’s timezone, and has no way to delete budgets or lines.
- The month picker goes 12 months back and 6 months ahead. The Budgets grid shows last month through 6 months ahead.
- Spend runs through yesterday. “Today” follows your agency’s timezone, America/New_York by default, and there’s no setting for it in Orbit.
- Budgets can’t be deleted, only replaced with a new amount.
- There’s no way to remove a line, hide an unmatched campaign, or match a campaign to an existing line.
- The trend chart covers 5 months back to 2 months ahead and counts only plan or typed budgets. Months on an even split or shape plan count as $0 there.
- Months and days that have started are locked from replanning unless you tick the option to replan them.
- The Excel export has no margin, profit or impression columns.
Explainer: System Role: what each one can do
A System Role sets what someone can change in Orbit. Owners and Admins can do almost everything. Managers and Specialists work on plans, reports and pacing, and can view clients and connections without changing them.
Owner and Admin have the same permissions, with three exceptions. Only an Owner can make someone an Owner. The last Owner can’t be demoted or removed, so your agency always has one. And only an Admin can choose a client’s Trade Desk advertiser and push to The Trade Desk.
A System Role decides what someone can do. Which clients they can see is set separately, in their Client Access.
| Task | Owner and Admin | Manager | Specialist |
|---|---|---|---|
| Add and edit clients | Yes | View only | View only |

Explainer: What your client sees, and what stays with your team
Your client sees the Performance view in their portal, AI reports you’ve approved, and custom reports you’ve shared. Creative Score, Sales, BI dashboards and Pacing are for your team only.
| What | Client sees it? | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Performance view | Yes | Their portal’s Dashboard, opening on the last 30 days with no filters |
| Sales, Creative Score, BI dashboards | No | Agency only |
| AI reports | Once approved and sent | Documents, and Recent documents on their Dashboard |
| Custom reports | If you share them | Reports |
| Pacing | No | No portal page |
| Your range, filters and comparison | No | They change only your view |
- The strip above each view says which it is: “This is the report {client} sees in their portal.” or “Agency only.”
- The client’s reporting goal decides which metrics their Performance view shows.
- A portal page shows only while it’s switched on for that client in Settings › Client Navigation: Documents for AI reports, Reports for custom reports.
