Get a new link when yours has expired
A used or expired link opens a page with a button for a fresh one. Which button you press depends on the kind of link.
Before you start
- Who can do this
- Anyone with an Orbit login or invite
- Where in Orbit
- Your name, bottom of the sidebar
Steps
Tick a step’s number when it’s done. We’ll remember where you were.
Open the link. If it can’t be used, the page says why, for example “Can’t use this invite link”.
Invite link: press , enter your email and press Send reset link. Orbit sends a fresh invite.
Magic link: press Back to sign in, enter your email and press Send Magic Link.
Password reset link: press Request a new reset email, enter your email and press Send reset link.
Use the link in the newest email. Each link works once.
When it worked
A new email arrives, and its link opens a page with a button such as Accept invitation, Sign in or Set a new password.
If something goes wrong
Orbit showsThis link isn’t valid. It may have been cut off or changed by your email app.
Copy the whole link from the email into your browser’s address bar, or ask for a new one.
Orbit showsWe couldn’t confirm this link.
Ask for a new link with the button on that page.
No new invite arrives.
Orbit sends a new invite to the same address at most once a minute. Wait a minute and ask again.
How it works
Explainer: When a link has expired or was already used
A used, expired or broken link opens a page that says what happened and offers a fresh link. The button depends on the kind of link.
| Link | Page title | What to press |
|---|---|---|
| Invite | “Can’t use this invite link” | Send me a new link, then enter your email. Orbit sends a fresh invite. |
| Magic link | “Can’t use this sign-in link” | Back to sign in, then send a new magic link. |
| Password reset | “Can’t reset your password” | Request a new reset email, then enter your email. |
- “This link has already been used or has expired. Each link works once.” It was used, or its time ran out.
- “This link isn’t valid. It may have been cut off or changed by your email app.” Copy the whole link into your browser, or ask for a new one.
- “We couldn’t confirm this link.” Something else went wrong. Ask for a new one.
- If you haven’t accepted your invite yet, Forgot password? sends you a new invite instead of a reset link.
- Orbit sends a new invite to the same address at most once a minute.
Explainer: How emailed sign-in links work
Every link Orbit emails you, for an invite, a magic link or a password reset, opens a page with one button. The link is used only when you press that button, and each link works once.
| Link | Button in the email | Page it opens | Button to press |
|---|---|---|---|
| Invite | Accept invite | Accept your invitation | Accept invitation |
| Magic link | Sign in to Orbit | Sign in to Orbit | Sign in |
| Password reset | Reset password | Confirm it’s you | Set a new password |
- Opening a link doesn’t use it up. Only pressing the button does, so an email security scanner that opens links first won’t spend yours.
- Each link works once. Orbit doesn’t show how long a link lasts; if it has expired, the page tells you and offers a new one.
- Didn’t ask for the email? Ignore it. Nothing changes until someone presses the button.
- Magic links go only to emails that already have an Orbit login. The sign-in page says the link was sent either way.
- These emails carry the Orbit logo, not your agency’s.
